German publisher Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747—1822) edited the Bilderbuch für Kinder… (“Picturebook for Children”) in 12 volumes between 1790 and 1830. It appeared in monthly installments and aimed to “spread the knowledge of the epochs out before children” (quoted after Wikipedia). It contains beautiful illustrations of animals, plants, minerals, people, as well as technological inventions and architectural achievements. Also, dragons.
The illustrations above are all from Volume 1. Eleven volumes are digitally available at the University Heidelberg.
